M sand (Manufactured Sand) is the only option left as a substitute while making the concrete due to over exploitation of river sand. But the M Sand we are using is of high-quality? The quality of the M sand is always questionable because of the high demand. Manufacturers of M Sand could use a lower quality of raw material in order to make high profits and a large amount of M Sand. Poor quality of M Sand will affect the durability of the building and manufacturing site. For this reason, the quality of M Sand needs to be checked while purchasing.

Although, several options are available in the market and various labs are doing these tests for the good of the manufacturing fields and civil engineers. But it is impossible to approach these labs every time just for our satisfaction. Need not to worry, we have some important tests that can be done on the field only before utilizing M Sand for construction purposes.

  1. Organic impurities Test – This test is done for every 20 cum or part thereof at the field only.
  2. Silt content test – this is conducted for every 20 cum in the field only.
  3. Particle size distribution – This test can be conducted on the site or at the laboratory for every 40 cum of sand.
  4. Bulking if sand – conducted at site for every 20 cum of sand.Another simple method to check the quality of the M Sand is mentioned as below:
  • Take some samples of sand on your wet palm. Rub that sample of sand and if the quality of sand is good, it will not stick to your hand, whereas the sand with impurities will stick and change the color of your palm. Poor quality of sand contains clay and silt particles. Now you need to test the silt test on the site.
  • In a glass of water add some quantity of sand and stir the mixture. Now keep the mixture aside and allow it to settle and observe it after an hour. Pure and amalgamation free sand will settle immediately but it forms a distinctive layer of silt if sand contains silt and clay particles.
  • To check the organic impurities in the sand, you need to repeat the above procedure by adding some caustic soda (salt) in the mixture. If the mixture changes the color to brown, there must be some organic impurities and such sand can’t be used for construction purposes.
  • You can also test the salt by tasting it. Take a pinch of sand and taste it, if it tastes salty then sand is impure.
  • Another simple method to check the sand is visualization. It means sand should not contain any organic like shell, shingle, etc.
